Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is the newest game of a series brought back from "back in the day" by Bethesda Softworks with developers of the Elder Scrolls games. It takes place in a post-nuclear chaotic setting with more specifically on the desecrated west coast of America in and around Washington D.C. As it is developed by Bethesda, you can expect a huge open playground and go anywhere you want, do what you want, "whatever you feel like" type of adventure game that sucks you in quickly. Fallout 3 delivers.

The game begins with you being removed from your mother by your father and some doctors. You select a name and play through select phases of childhood, choosing stats and areas of expertise as you go. Your childhood consists of an underground complex called a Vault, it is a sad and depressing place so terribly you will be joyous when life falls apart after you turn nineteen. Your father leaves for random reasons and all hell breaks lose and you choose to go out and follow him. You step go outside the vault and the game stops holding you back, you finish your character and delete any childhood decisions that you weren't happy with and you are free to do whatever you want, search for your father or explore the trashed landscape and forgo side-quests at the nearby encampment of Megaton.

The fact that Fallout 3 is developed by Bethesda is undoubtedly going to be a bone of contention among hardcore fans of the original two Fallout games. They have a strong cult following and the fact that Bethesda have stamped their mark firmly on the series is going to anger many Fallout purists. I never played the originals so I could play Fallout 3 without prejudice, but it is so clearly a Bethesda game and possesses so many traits of the Elder Scrolls games that I can easily see that the formula will have changed, and some are not going to like it.

This seems very skeptical and strange when you first start playing the game, and you will desire standard FPS combat, though you will soon become embraced to it. In an attempt to eviscerate some strategy to battles, the makers have created the V.A.T.S targeting system. This slows down time and gives you the chance to aim at specific points of your enemy's body, at the expense of action points. You can throw out far more damage in V.A.T.S mode and you can strategically tear apart your enemies. For example if you come across a Super Mutant holding a mini-gun that is ripping you apart, you can aim for the gun and put it out of usability. There are cons to this system however, as it alienates you vulnerable to attack and movement becomes delayed before you can leave V.A.T.S. mode. The most awesome thing about it is the close up action shots of your enemy as they are shot. You get to witness heads and limbs explode and go in all directions in a cloud of blood and body parts. When you can see the impact of the bullet as it slams through the skull. To skip these sequences would be awesome sometimes because they start to get more annoying than anything else in the world after the millionth head go flying through the air in a plethora of blood.

Well thats about it for Fallout 3 tomorrow come back for another new game review!
